The 2024 Zero Hunger Hackathon challenged the tech community to develop solutions for Zero Hunger. From 11 finalists, judges chose 5 winners—one for each challenge—based on their value, scalability, ease of use, accessibility, creativity, and alignment with the nonprofit’s mission.

Hackathon winner:Latin ninjas from AWS

Winning solution: Manka Chatbot

”Manka” Chatbot to Combat Child Malnutrition in Rural Ecuador. 
Manka is a new mobile chatbot that delivers healthy menus and nutritional guidance to mothers in rural and indigenous communities in Ecuador.

Ripple Effect fights poverty and builds sustainable livelihoods in eastern Africa through 3 main programs: Sustainable agriculture, Gender and social inclusion, Enterprise.

Hackathon winner:BlueRider.Software

Winning solution: Riffle Farm

Riffle Farm is an innovative application designed to support rural women in enhancing their agricultural knowledge and practices, which aims to address the challenges faced by women in rural areas by providing them with easy access to crucial agricultural information.

MAHOUNA FARMS is on a mission is to revolutionize agriculture in Africa by combining traditional knowledge with the latest technological advances. 

Hackathon winner:Codeplay from Convedo

Winning solution: M' Farms Plus

The app connects local West African farmers with larger markets, helping them reach a wider audience and sell their products more efficiently.

Haba Na Haba Food Bank is an NGO based in Uganda that is passionately working to alleviate hunger and strengthen local communities by collecting and distributing food to hunger-relief charities and people.

Winning solution: Haba na Haba ussd application

The USSD-Based Surplus Food Distribution System, an innovative solution designed to combat food waste and improve food accessibility which connects surplus food providers with individuals in need through the use of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) and Africa’s Talking API.

Food for Education is delivering affordable, nutritious meals at scale to Kenyan public primary schools. By 2030, they aim to feed 3,000,000 children a day across 3 African countries. Filling tummies and awakening possibilities.

Hackathon winner: Solutions Engineering by AWS

Winning solution: Offline WLAN for Tap2Eat

The implemented solution requires a wireless LAN (without internet) set up with a WIFI router, where a Spring Boot server and a mock Tap2Eat app demonstrate wristband taps sending HTTP requests to verify if a student has claimed a meal, with an alternative Bluetooth mesh concept proposed for future implementation to reduce hardware costs and power consumption.
